operation is suspended Emergency stop conditions
occur when an emergency stop button is pressed or a
fault occurs in a machine
fault
A condition whereby a machine's operation is sus-
pended after a problem has occurred with a machine
or the line After the problem has been corrected, the
machine usually must be reset before it can be restart-
ed A reset is a precautionary step that helps to ensure
safe operation
field device
A sensor that provides input to a programmable logic
controller, such as a photoeye, limit switch, or proxim-
ity sensor
flash point
The temperature at which the film begins to melt.
flight length
The distance between two adjoining pushers on the

erator usually jogs a machine to align its components
or to ensure the machine is ready to work at normal
speeds
leading edge
The downstream edge of a product or package
length
The measure of the base of an object along its greatest
dimension Usually a measure of how long something
is
limit switch
A mechanical sensor that detects the presence or
absence of an object by making or not making contact
