Part 1: General Information
5. PRECAUTIONS
NO.
if
Precaution/Item
Multi-firing and manual flash operations are not
available when the 540EZ
is used with the
EOS 750, 700 or 850.
. Camera display when flash exposure compen-
sation is set on the 540EZ.
. Conditions in which quick firing is prohibited:
@ When shooting continuous exposures with
an A-TTL camera
@® In TTL automatic flash control mode
@ In manual firing mode with an output level
of 1/1 or 1/2
. The 540EZ's lock nut should be sufficiently
loosened before attaching or removing the
flash unit to or from the camera.
. The built-in wide panel should be pulled out
gently to avoid damage.
. Continuous firing limitations in manual firing
mode.
1/1, 1/2
15 bursts
1/4, 1/8
20 bursts
1/16, 1/32
40 bursts
1/64, 1/128
no limit
. Repeated multi-firing operations should be lim-
ited to 10 exposures, after which the flash
should be rested for approximately 10 minutes.
. When using catchlight function with the flash
bounced upward at 90°, the shooting distance
should not exceed 1.5 m.
. The 540EZ's internal batteries are used at all
- times, even when the flash is connected to an
external power source. Accordingly, when the
flash is used continuously after loading new
batteries in both the flash unit and the external
power source, it is possible that the batteries
inside the flash unit will become exhausted
before those in the external power source.
Since the 540EZ will not function correctly if
this occurs, the user should always carry spare
batteries for the flash unit in addition to the
external power source.
Reason/Remarks
Because the flash unit always sees the camera as
operating in fully automatic mode.
(*Settings are not possible from the 540EZ side.)
The +/- indicator is displayed in the viewfinder (but
not in the LCD panel) when using the EOS-1 or
EOS-1N. With other EOS models, no indication of
flash exposure compensation is provided on the
camera.
In regards to ©, quick firing is prohibited because
the operation of the camera and flash assumes
full-power output.
Quick firing is prohibited in conditions @® and @
due to the difficulty in maintaining stable automatic
flash exposure control.
Though mounting is possible even if the lock pin is
protruding slightly, we recommend using the cor-
rect method described at the left.
If the wide-panel is accidentally broken off the
flash, slide the main switch from OFF to ON while
simultaneously pressing the flash mode and zoom
buttons. Doing this restores the auto zoom and
manual zoom operations to their normal state.
These restrictions are implemented to prevent the
flash head from damage due to overheating.
If the flash is fired continuously for the number of
bursts listed at the left, the flash should be rested
for approximately 10 minutes to let the flash head
cool.
This is to prevent the flash head from damage due
to overheating.
Because the amount of reflected light available for
producing the catchlight effect is quite small.
To minimize charging time as much as possible,
the 540EZ is designed to use power from both the
internal batteries and external power source in
parallel, regardless of the external power source
used.
*The above design is also used for the 430EZ
when combined with the Compact Battery Pack
E. With other external power sources, however,
the internal batteries are used only to supply
power to the flash unit's control circuits, while the
external power source is used only for flash
charging.
