About This User's Guide

This user's guide provides instructions on how to install the DSL-502G ADSL Router and use it to connect a
computer or Ethernet LAN to the Internet.
If you are using a computer with a functioning Ethernet port, you can use the Quick Installation Guide to quickly
establish your ADSL connection and access the Internet.
Terminology
This document uses the terms "Router" (first letter upper case) to refer specifically to the DSL-502G ADSL
Router, and "router" (first letter lower case) to refer to all such devices including the DSL-502G. ADSL service
is provided by different types of businesses including telephone service providers, Internet service providers and
other businesses that provide computer network and telecommunications services. The term "service provider" is
used in this guide to refer to any service that sells or leases DSL services and equipment.
Overview of the User's Guide
Chapter 1 Introduction to Router – Describes the Router and its key features. Provides an introduction
to ADSL. Lists standards to which the Router complies. Contains a packing list.
Chapter 2 Prepare for Installation – Lists everything needed for the installation of the Router, including
specific information needed for configuration. Provides space for recording all the necessary information.
Chapter 3 Hardware Installation – Discusses how to connect the Router to an Ethernet LAN.
Chapter 4 First Time Set Up – Provides information on how to configure the Router and establish the
ADSL connection using the web-based manager.
Chapter 5 Web-based Management – Describes how to use the web-based manager and discusses the
management options available.
Appendix A Technical Specifications – Lists the technical specifications of the Router, including
standards compliance.
Appendix B LAN Setup – Discusses different options for IP addressing on your LAN.
Appendix C IP Concepts – A discussion of IP address assignment and subnets for a private network.
Appendix D DSL-502G Firmware Upgrade Utility – Describes how to install and use the firmware
upgrade utility used with the Router.
Appendix E Microfilters and Splitters – Contains illustrated examples of how to use low pass filters.

Before You Start

Please read and make sure you understand all the prerequisites for proper installation of your new Router. Have
all the necessary information and equipment on hand before beginning the installation.

Low Pass Filters

ADSL and telephone services share the same copper wire to carry their respective signals, a filtering mechanism
may be necessary to avoid mutual interference. It may be necessary to install a low pass filter device (also called
micro-filter or splitter) for each telephone that shares the line with the ADSL line. Micro-filters are easy to install
passive devices that connect to the ADSL device and/or telephone using standard telephone cable. Ask your
service provider for more information about the use of low pass filters with your installation. Appendix E
provides illustrated examples of how to install two common types of filters.
