Installing and Configuring Enhanced DFS 3.0

Planning for Enhanced DFS 3.0 Installation and Configuration

Planning for Enhanced DFS 3.0 Installation and
Configuration
You can configure the following types of Enhanced DFS servers:
A System Control server distributes system configuration information that is
shared by all Enhanced DFS server machines in a cell. System Control servers
can also be used as Binary Distribution machines.
A Fileset Location Database (FLDB) server tracks and records the locations of all
filesets. At least one is required in each cell.
A File server exports UFS or LFS data to the global Enhanced DFS name space.
At least one File Server is required in each cell that is running Enhanced DFS.
The File server can be configured automatically when you configure the FLDB
server, depending on the setting of the CONFIG_DFS_FLDB_ONLY
environment variable. See "dfs_config Environment Variables" in Chapter 3 for
more information.
A Private File server also exports file system data to the global Enhanced DFS
name space. A Private File server is controlled by the owner of the machine, not
by the system administrator. The purpose of a Private File server is to allow
individual users to export a small number of filesets.
Although you must configure at least one FLDB server and the
accompanying File server, all other Enhanced DFS servers are optional.
Note that the Enhanced DFS name space can be accessed through any DFS
client system.
When configuring a host to be both an Enhanced DFS client with disk cache
and an Enhanced DFS/UFS File server, you cannot locate the Enhanced DFS
client cache directory on the disk that will be exported to the Enhanced DFS
name space. (The Enhanced DFS client cache directory defaults to
/var/opt/dce/adm/dfs/cache, but any local path can be used.) Hosts with
only one disk or logical volume, therefore, should not be configured as both
an Enhanced DFS client with disk cache and an Enhanced DFS File server.
