Chapter 3
Removing and Replacing the HP NetServer's
Covers
You can remove all or part of the HP NetServer's top cover in the following
situations:
You must power down the HP NetServer before taking off the top cover.
Remove the entire top cover for full access to the processor baseboard and
the I/O baseboard.
l
You must power down the HP NetServer before taking off the PCI access
panel to install all accessory boards. Refer to "Removing the PCI Access
Panel" later in this chapter.
NOTE
The HP NetServer can only remain powered on when
removing the PCI Access Panel to replace PCI Hot Plug
boards. The HP NetServer can operate safely when this access
panel is removed, but only on a temporary basis. Refer to
"Removing the PCI Access Panel" later in this chapter.

Tools Required

The following tools are required for extending the chassis out of the rack and for
cover removal and installation on the HP NetServer:

T-15 Torx
driver – Top Cover and PCI Access Panel
l
®
T-25 Torx
driver – Rack screws

Removing the Top Cover

To remove and replace the entire top cover, refer to the following procedure.
CAUTION
Do not operate the HP NetServer LXr 8500 with its top cover
removed. Serious damage to the HP NetServer could result.
1. If the HP NetServer is operating, log off all users and if necessary, back-up
files.
2. Follow the instructions in your network operating system (NOS)
documentation to gracefully shut down all networking software and
applications.
