    Choosing a location To help guarantee trouble-free operation of your machine, place it on a flat, stable surface near your workstation. Leave enough space to allow for easy paper loading, paper out and opening the front cover. Do not place your machine: - In direct sunlight.

    Installing the toner cartridge 1. Open the cover by pressing the cover release button. 2. Raise the cover. 3. Unpack the toner cartridge. Grip the cartridge firmly and pull the sealing tape slowly from the cartridge. You may feel some initial resistance. As the tape will have a small amount of toner on both sides, take care not to get toner on your clothes.
  • Page 18 4. Gently shake the cartridge from side to side 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. 5. Find the cartridge slots inside the machine, one on each side. 6. Grasp the handle and slide the cartridge down between the cartridge slots, until it drops into place.

Notes: • Do not expose the cartridge to direct sunlight or strong room light. • To avoid damaging the photo-sensitive drum, never open the drum shutter. • To avoid damaging the cartridge, complete cartridge installation as quickly as possible.

    Loading paper into the cassette You can load approximately 250 sheets of paper in the paper cassette. you can also load paper in the second cassette. The window on the front of the paper cassette shows the amount of paper currently left in the cassette.

    How to adjust paper guides Length guides There are two main guides and one auxiliary guide as shown below to adjust for the paper length. One of main guide is for legal, A4, or folio size, and the other is for letter (LTR), executive (EXEC), or B5 size paper. When you load letter size paper, it is recommended that you use the auxiliary guide on the upper right corner of the cassette with the appropriate main guide.

    Using the control panel One-touch dial and special function buttons Use to call most frequently used numbers with one button. Also, use these buttons with Menu button to set up special functions or print lists. The display shows the current status of your machine and guides you through various tasks using a menu system for each operation.

    Using the number keypad As you perform various tasks, you will need to enter names and numbers. For example, when you set up your machine you enter your name (or your company’s name) and telephone number. When you use the one-touch dial or speed dial, you also enter the telephone numbers and names.

    Sending a fax Preparing documents for faxing or copying You can use the machine to fax, or copy documents that are printed on standard letter, legal, or A4 size paper. Follow these guidelines to prepare your documents. • Do not attempt to feed the following types of documents into the machine.

    Setting document resolution and contrast We recommend sending documents printed using a typewriter, felt tip pen, black ink, or laserprinter. The paper should be white or very light, and of normal weight not cardboard. Blue lines on a ruled pad do not fax well. When you send normal documents, you need not adjust the resolution and the contrast.

    Sending a fax automatically 1. After loading a document, enter the number of the remote fax machine using the number keypad. You can store one-touch or speed dial numbers so that you can dial your most frequently used numbers with one touch of a button or speed dial number.

    Automatic redial When you send a fax, if the number you have dialed is busy or there is no answer, the machine hangs up, waits for the specified retry term and redials the number. If after the specified number of retry attempts (retry count), the machine fails to connect, the machine returns to Standby mode.

    Delayed transmission You can configure your machine to send a fax at a specified time. Up to 50 delayed transmission operations can be reserved in your machine. 1.     Memory transmission (Broadcasting) With memory transmission, documents are stored in memory and automatically sent to one or more remote stations. Use this feature to send your documents to multiple locations. You can store a maximum of 25 fax numbers for a memory transmission. If you need to send your fax to more then 25 locations, you can increase the number of fax locations dialed by including a group dial number as one of the 25 numbers.

    Priority transmission When priority transmission is enabled, a high priority document can be transmitted ahead of previously scheduled operations. In this operation, the document is scanned into memory. It is immediately transmitted at the conclusion of any operation already in progress. A priority transmission interrupts a broadcast operation between stations (for example, when transmission to station A ends but before transmission to station B begins), or between redial attempts.

    Polling What is Polling? Polling means that one fax machine requests another to send a document. This is useful for sending unattended faxes. The person who wants to receive the document calls the machine holding the original and requests that the document be sent.

    Making a copy Making a copy The resolution is automatically set to SUPER FINE while the copy feature is in use, however, the contrast can be changed to produce the best copy quality for particular documents containing faint markings, dark image, photographs or other halftone images.

    Other functions Using function buttons Redial To redial the number last called Press Redial/Pause. If a document is loaded in the document tray, the machine automatically begins to send. To search through redial memory 1. Press and hold Redial/Pause for 2 seconds. The redial memory in your machine retains the last 10 numbers called.

    Flash Some special phone services require a switch-hook signal for proper operation. For example, if you have call waiting, you can put a call on hold and take a second call on the same line by pressing the switch-hook button. Pressing Flash performs the equivalent of a switch-hook operation.

    Printing reports Your fax machine can print reports containing useful information - schedule job, system data, etc. The following reports are available: Help list This list shows the machine’s basic functions and commands to use as a quick reference guide. Message confirmation report This report shows the fax number, the number of pages, elapsed time of the operation, the communication mode and the communication results.

    Call back message This report is printed automatically when you do not respond to a remote operator’s voice request. Power failure report This report is printed automatically when data in memory was erased. This report shows data (if any) erased by the power failure.     Selectable options These instructions assume that you have followed the steps on page 2.42 under ‘Setting an option’ and that the machine is prompting you to change one of the options listed here. • UPPER CASSETTE—Select the paper size you will use for the recording paper.

If the line quality is poor, transmission time may be increased when ECM is enabled. Press 1 to turn the error correction mode on. Press 2 to turn the error correction mode off.
