4-5 Daily Maintenance

In order to keep the Digital Media Workstation in
optimum operating condition, you should check it
periodically and perform routine maintenance. If a
trouble occurs and you are unable to determine the
cause, do not continue and contact your Sony service
representative.

4-5-1 Backing Up Data

You should make periodic backups of the data on the
Digital Media Workstation's hard disks and the hard
disks of the DMW-ST001 Fibre Channel Storage Unit.
Sony Corporation shall not be liable for any loss of
data that may result from trouble with the hard disks.
Note about erasing data from hard disks
Take note of the following matters when you dispose
of or discard your XPRI System.
Data deleted from the hard disks of computers may not
be visible from the file system, but it remains
physically present, even after the hard disks are
reformatted.
By using special software and hardware tools, it is
possible to reconstruct and reuse such data, creating
the risk that confidential data may become known to
third parties.
In order to avoid this kind of trouble, it is
recommended that all data be physically erased from
hard disks by software tools designed for that purpose,
or by data erasure services.

4-5-2 Regular Defragmenting

For efficient, trouble-free use of the hard disks of the
XPRI main unit and external hard disks, it is
recommended that they be defragmented about once
every week.
To defragment hard disks, use the Disk Defragmenter
tool included with Windows, or a commercial
defragmenting tool.
For more information about commercial defragmenting
tools, contact a Sony service representative.

Chapter 4 Maintenance
Before defragmenting disks, note the following.
• Check to be sure that logical drives have at least 20%
free capacity before starting a defragment. (If free
capacity is low, create at least 20% free capacity by
deleting unneeded files.)
• Always exit all XPRI applications before starting a
defragment.
• After defragmenting, always exit the defragmenting
tool before starting XPRI applications. The
performance of XPRI applications may be impaired if
they are run at the same time as a defragmenting tool.

4-5-3 Cleaning

To keep the system in optimum working condition,
you should clean system components periodically.
Cleaning the Main Unit
Before cleaning the Digital Media Workstation or
Fibre Channel Storage Unit, always turn the power off
and disconnect the AC power cord from the power
source.
Clean the case and panels of the Digital Media
Workstation and Fibre Channel Storage Unit by
wiping with a dry, soft cloth. To remove stubborn
stains, wipe with a cloth moistened with a neutral
cleaning agent, and finish by wiping with a dry, soft
cloth. Do not use alcohol, benzene, thinner, pesticides,
or other volatile solvents. Doing so can result in
flaking or discoloring of the case.
Cleaning the keyboard
Clean the keyboard by wiping with a dry, soft cloth.
Before cleaning the keyboard, always power off the
Main Unit and all peripherals.
Cleaning the mouse
To keep the mouse in good working order, you need to
ensure that the ball inside the mouse can roll smoothly.
To keep the mouse ball clean, avoid using the mouse
in dusty locations, and clean it periodically with the
following procedure.
1
Power off the Digital Media Workstation.
